The only reason to visit Dambulla is to climb Dambulla cave temple where one of Sri Lanka's past King's saught refuge amongst Buddhist hermit-monks. It's a hot climb, well worth the effort! The King survived and regained his thrown, rewarding the monks with Royal patronage and protection, one of the many links which makes Sri Lanka predominantly Buddhist. Today Dambulla caves are a Buddhist holy site of pilgrimage. An alternate far less holy pilgrimage is just around the corner at Dambulla Resthouse "arguably the coldest most refreshing beer in Sri Lanka"
