An eco hotel created by arguably Sri Lanka's foremost architect the late Geoffrey Bawa. Kandalama was one of his pet projects, it created a great deal of fuss from its inception. No one thought it could be built without destroying a very sensitive local environment, in a remote dry region of Sri Lanka. There were a great many protests, strikes and delays. Today, it is an outstanding success story, not only in its eco friendly design, but in that it provides sustainable development and employment in a region which is otherwise desperately poor. Kandalama is an awarded "eco hotel" by international standards. The food is well renowned and so is the infinity pool perched on a rock ledge over looking jungle and Kandalama lake, where elephants sometimes walk by in the evening. Kandalama is an expression of Geoffrey Bawa "and what an expression". A note worthy activity is early morning hot air ballooning over the Sigiriya area; that's if your budget allowes. http://www.heritancehotels.com/HK/index.php Superb site on the life and works of Geoffrey bawa http://archnet.org/library/parties/ more pictures
